Claire McFadden Jackbox Games

Meet Claire McFadden! Claire is a Managing Editor here at Jackbox Games. If you’ve ever played Blather ‘Round from The Jackbox Party Pack 7, you can thank Claire for her genius in bringing that to life. In fact, Claire wrote this detailed article providing some behind-the-scenes insight on the process of creating Blather ‘Round.

It is a delight to experience Claire’s immense creativity in office. It is equally delightful and inspiring to watch Claire create funny, strange, and charming content on her own time. Personal favorites include this apartment tour parody and this artful glimpse into Claire’s life over the past decade.

Just see what Claire’s Jackbox Games coworkers have to say about her:

“Claire is just very good at a lot of things.” – Brooke Hofer

“Claire is efficient, hilarious, and comes with all batteries included. Five stars!” – Liz Anderson

“Claire is an extremely funny and smart writer. The Dictionarium host is maybe my favorite of all our hosts and a huge part of that is because of the humor and originality of Claire’s writing for that game.” – Arnie Niekamp

Learn more about Claire in her own words below!

1. What brought you to Jackbox Games? And, how long have you been with Jackbox?

A friend emailed me the job posting three years ago. I submitted a writing packet without too-too much thought, but then it so happened that the very next weekend I was in Seattle with friends and they introduced me to the games. We played about 6 hours of Survive the Internet and cried laughing, so when I got a chance to do a callback packet (the very next day!), I tried really, really hard.

2. What is your favorite thing about your specific role at Jackbox?

I love casting the host and then running the voiceover sessions. It makes me feel very cool to give directions through a wall of glass and say things like “can you do it again but make your voice go up at the end?”

3. Aside from the work associated with your role, what do you enjoy most about working at Jackbox?

Pre-pandemic, my favorite thing was walking to Whole Foods with Brooke everyday at lunch. She knows every comedian in Chicago and so we always run into someone and then I smile and nod along like her good little daughter until she says “Do you know Claire? She’s a writer at Jackbox” and then I shake their hand. On our walk back to the office, I ask her for details about their life and then we discuss that. It rocked and I miss that weird little routine.

During the pandemic, my favorite part of the job is when all-company meetings go off the rails and the chat lights up.

4. Do you have a favorite Jackbox game? If so, what is it and why?

Blather ‘Round is my baby. The first time I tested a paper prototype it was with my cousins. When I asked them if they liked it, they all said no. So it was fun to email them a link to the trailer, six months later. (My family is an email family, okay.)

5. What might surprise people about working at Jackbox?

You could throw out an offhand idea in a playtest and a couple months later, it’s a new feature in the game.

6. What are some hobbies you enjoy outside of work?

I swim in Lake Michigan, May through September. I go on really long walks, drink a Diet Coke from McDonald’s almost every day ($1.11 with tax) and I’m always working on a little video project.
